Does everyone remember this movie?
This was a fully Chinese-language film produced by SOD, known for their hype, for the AV Open competition. Each actress diligently memorized her Chinese lines, hoping to stand out in the fiercely competitive AV Open. However, things didn't go as planned. Although it generated considerable buzz in the Chinese-speaking community, the AV Open was a Japanese-organized competition, and Chinese moviegoers weren't enthusiastic. Ultimately, it was a double loss; the film didn't win any awards, and SOD staff privately revealed that sales were poor…
Unexpectedly, after so long, the Japanese AV industry has seen another film, "TokyoToy ep01 [Japan's First Fully Chinese-Language AV]": So, does this film disregard SOD's work? No, what's impressive about this work is that it doesn't fabricate anything, even the male actor speaks Chinese, and they managed to film in Japan while borders were still closed due to the pandemic. You can see the actress, Tokyo Toy, in front of the Asakusa Kaminarimon Gate in the stills:
I know what you're thinking: Who is this up-and-coming Taiwanese AV actress, "Tokyo Toy"? Is she really Taiwanese? If not, who is she?
Frankly, this work is much better than the SOD film. I could understand about 60% of what the actress said, and it wasn't just memorization. She also had no major problems conversing with the male actor in Mandarin (yes, the male actor speaks Mandarin). However, her Japanese accent was very heavy, and her vocabulary wasn't very Taiwanese (Taiwanese people don't wish you physical and mental well-being when greeting someone). Plus, she wore a mask throughout the film, so even though the cover is in Traditional Chinese and looks very Taiwanese, the text and the performance itself feel strange.
So, is this another fake Taiwanese person?
Hearing her accent, everyone probably thinks she's a Japanese person who's studied Chinese for a long time, right? Because although she has social media accounts, all her Twitter posts are in Japanese, clearly indicating that Chinese isn't her native language; but this time, the answer is reversed: she really does speak Chinese and has some connection to Taiwan, so saying she's been lying from beginning to end isn't entirely accurate...
Have you guessed it yet? She claims to be of Taiwanese-Japanese descent, "Ito Meru (伊東爱瑠)"!
Although she has her own social media (https://twitter.com/toto_kyoy/), she is Ito Meru.
So the truth is clear: why can she make films in Japan? Why does she speak Chinese fairly fluently but with an accent? The answer is because she is Ito Meru (伊东める). I'm more curious about who the male actor in the film speaks to her entirely in Chinese. And given the failure of SOD, everyone knows that Japanese audiences don't support these kinds of entirely Chinese-language works, and the Chinese-speaking community won't buy them. Why would any production company still make them? Furthermore, they even had Ito manage her Twitter account under the name Tokyo Toy, clearly intending to make a big splash.
It's intriguing to wonder if there will be a third installment in this series?
