Hatake Mei seems like a perfectly normal name, but if you feed it to Google, you'll find that the girl who's best at making Gundam models in Japan also has this name:

It's obvious the production company probably thought there was a significant overlap between their target audience and those who enjoy model-making, hence the stage name used for the actress to create confusion.
