Someone told me that it's been tough for newcomers who debuted in the last two years.
Indeed, the AV industry has never seen two established stars like Shoko Takahashi and Yua Mikami blocking the way, plus Arina Hashimoto and other mid-generation stars currently at their peak, and their recent high-profile collaborations attracting attention. It's incredibly difficult for newcomers to achieve instant fame…
So what can they do? They have to resort to unconventional methods!

"Hatake Mei," who debuted with the evil empire S1, is a prime example. Looking at her debut work, "Newcomer NO.1 STYLE Hatake Mei AV Debut," and then at her cover, you might not know what strange tricks the production company played. Actually, the problem lies in her stage name. Hatake Mei seems like a perfectly normal name, but if you feed it to Google, you'll find that the girl who's best at making Gundam models in Japan also has this name:
So, she plays with Gundam, and he plays with anal balls?
It's obvious the production company probably thought there was a significant overlap between their target audience and those who enjoy model-making, hence the stage name used for the actress to create confusion. However, compared to the seven fairies she co-starred with, Hata Mei seems rather plain. Will this really get fans aroused?
I think… that's why the cover says "Original Gem Beauty"!
What does "Original Gem" before "Beauty" mean? It means she still needs polishing; with a little grinding, shaping, and refinement, she'll shine like a diamond. S1's most representative actress of this type is currently "Kano Yura." When she first debuted, many criticized her for not having the charisma she showed in her cover photos. However, after a year of training, she's made it big. Tickets for her meet-and-greets sell out, and she even goes to year-end parties with fans (which are expensive and difficult to organize). Linx's manager bluntly stated, "She's our number one..."
Kano Yura is good, but what about Hata Mei?
The lack of an ethereal cover is a disadvantage for Hata Mei, but judging from the stills and screenshots, she's not as "rustic" as she appears on the cover, and her performance is more passionate and engaging than expected. I wouldn't dare say that giving her the same amount of time as Kano Yura would make her a top star, but don't let the cover fool you into thinking she's incapable of producing anything substantial. She's actually quite cute, so cute that S1 didn't even bother to include her sex scenes in their promotional video; the entire promotional short is just her being adorable from beginning to end.
Finally, I've seen the newcomer S1 was originally slated to debut in November, and I'm pretty sure it wasn't Hata Mei. This means S1 is missing a newcomer that would cause a bidding war between the two agencies. As for whether this newcomer is still around or will debut with S1, I'll have to wait until I go to Japan to find out for everyone…
